Meet the Doctors
Meet Dr. Janie Busk
I grew up in Yakima, WA, attended the University of Puget Sound after high school and went on to dental school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. I am so happy to be settled back in Eastern Washington, close to family and surroundings that I love! I am the proud mom of Jack William (5) and Natalie Anne (2), and I am very much looking forward to raising them here in the Wenatchee Valley.
As a child, I went to a friendly, light-hearted dentist who made the experience fun. As a result, I looked forward to dental appointments. It is my mission to provide a fun and caring environment where our patients feel the same way. Oral health affects many facets of our overall health and can also have a major impact on self-esteem. I feel that having a healthy smile is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves and I love helping people achieve their version of a perfect smile.
Following dental school, I completed an advanced education in general dentistry (AEGD) residency through the University of Washington. During this program, I was able to collaborate on complex treatment cases with some of Washington’s most experienced and respected clinicians. I met great dentists who have become lifelong mentors and friends. After completion of the residency program, Ryan and I got married, moved to Omak and worked together at Family Health Centers, treating Okanogan County’s most vulnerable, underserved families. While there, we became affiliate faculty with the University of Washington, mentoring students from the University during their four-month senior externship rotations in our clinic.
Ryan and I love working together as a team, and we are incredibly excited to meet you and discover how we can help you achieve a healthier smile.
Meet Dr. Ryan Busk
Growing up in Buckley, WA, my first professional aspiration was not to be a dentist. Far from it, actually – all I wanted to be was a logger. I dressed up as one for Halloween when I was 5, 6, and 7. I had a toy chainsaw, hardhat – the whole kit! I did eventually realize my dream of becoming a logger – not the tree cutting, flannel wearing type, but the University of Puget Sound variety instead (much geekier, but MUCH safer!) After graduating from UPS with a BS in Chemistry, I spent a yearlong sabbatical at Alta Ski Resort, while I sold tickets part time and skied full time. Refreshed from a year off, I followed Dr. Janie East, attending dental school at the University of Pittsburgh. Following graduation, Janie and I were hired to work with the underserved in Okanogan County at Family Health Centers.
Albert Schweitzer once said,
“Life becomes harder for us as we live for others, but it also becomes richer and happier.”
Over time, my understanding of that quote has become deeper, especially after marrying Dr. Janie and having a family of my own. Devoting my time, love, and energy to three of them has helped me grow tremendously! Certainly, as a dental clinician, I have become more patient and understanding. I now strive to meet my patients where they are, not where I think they should be. I spend much more time listening and trying to understand what they want and how I can help them achieve it.
I feel that being allowed to care for someone’s oral health is a great honor and privilege. I strive to partner with my patients to help improve and maintain the condition of their mouth. We are all so lucky to live in the third age of medicine, when Science is discovering so many links between gum disease and systemic health problems like heart disease and diabetes. As a dentist, I never thought I would be able to play such an important role in disease prevention. It is this aspect of dentistry more than any other that gets me excited for the future!
If I have any legacy at all when my dental career is finished, I know that it will be measured by how successfully I taught my patients not to need me. I see it as my job, and the job of our team, to teach each and every one of our patients how to take such good care of their teeth and gums that they never need any dental work outside of routine check-ups. If you are not already a patient in our practice, I am excited to meet you and learn how I can help you!
